Learning to Follow Jesus
Over 2,000 years Jesus called His first disciples with simple, yet provocative invitation: "Come and follow Me, and I will make you...." The New Testament record of that invitation recorded in the Gospels, says that those first disciples left their families, the security of their businesses, and the familiarity of their home, and followed Jesus.
We've all learned to follow in our lives: the kid in our neighborhood who always seemed to know what to do and when to do it; the guy who "led the pack" in our high school. Oh, we all know how to follow. That genre of following often led to unwelcome problems of various kinds; sometimes even problems with the law.
But, Jesus' invitation to follow comes with a promise: "I will make you." After just a brief three-and-a-half years with Jesus, those first disciples were made into men who literally "turned their lives upside down." They were made. Transformed. From the inside out.
